Rehabilitation report of East Terminal to Azadi Square With emphasis on pedestrian guardrail

Urban furniture is one of the environmental elements to improve the quality of space, and its function is to beautify and serve the citizens. Nowadays, in Tehran, pedestrian guardrails are one of the most important furniture elements in all parts of the city. Although urban furniture does not create a good landscape in cities in general, the main reason for insisting on its use in cities can be citizens’ safety.

Azadi, Enghelab and Damavand streets are the ones under study that have a large number of pedestrian guardrails. Being used along entire path, having the great impact on streets’ view and affecting the identity of the space, guardrails, in urban corridors, require special attention regarding current situation’s study in order to take a proper approach in dealing with this urban furniture. Accordingly, this report examines the physical, non-physical and landscape (Both objective and subjective approach) of all three streets properly in separate sections. To investigate the space studies more and to comply with the field requirements, mentioned streets are divided into several spatial nodes with similar details and remarkable differences with other nodes. Also, the study of global experiences under two subjects with different approaches in use of pedestrian guardrails in city and different approaches in design of them is done and then the existing examples in other parts of Tehran is studied.

The strengths and weaknesses of the route are demonstrated in a table which can ease submission of proposals based on the current situation. In summary of the studies, requirements of riders’ and pedestrians’ commuting, locating guardrails (under three separate concepts), and designing guardrails in BRT routes are achieved. Finally, the proposed strategies based on summarizing the case study and analyzing the strengths and weaknesses along the route are presented in detail.

Based on this study, not only it is not feasible to use plants on guardrails because of long 18km length of the route, climatic conditions and stability problems, but only it can emphasis these issues. It is also necessary that guardrail’s location to be based on the proposed concepts along the route in accordance with the identity of each sequence in order to act as an urban landmark further to serving and making the space more readable.
